MAC's Good Luck Trolls collection launched in New Zealand at the beginning of August, the timing seeming more than a little premature in my view since the movie it's promoting doesn't start showing in cinemas until December.
That doesn't excuse my lateness in posting, however - in fact, I'm so late that this collection is now in MAC's Goodbyes section at some seriously amazing discounted prices - I'm so tempted to grab more of the Lipglasses, alongside Sushi Kiss lipstick and Glow Rida Beauty Powder! Definitely loving MAC's turnaround on discounting older or discontinued products over the last year.
This collection is irrepressibly bright with packaging that's every bit as bright and sparkly as the products themselves. Presented in multiple colours and finishes, there are glittery Lipglass caps, iridescent compacts and matte neon lipstick tubes, all adorned with the iconic Troll silhouette. Colour lovers will certainly want to scoop something up before the collection is gone for good! My husband was cracking up at the names, too - how can you not get a giggle from names like 'Bubble Butt' and 'Twerkquoise'?

Twerkquoise Lipglass
There are four Lipglasses (RRP $42NZD) in this collection:
- Bubble Butt (magenta with fine pink and blue glitter)
- Glitter Grunge (sheer berry with extra fine silver sparkle)
- Twerkquoise (pictured)
- Saint Germain (a light cool pink which appears to be sold out in limited edition packaging but is part of the permanent Lipglass range).
Twerkquoise is described as a 'transparent sky blue with fine pink shimmer'. MAC's Lipglass formula has a tacky texture that generally helps it to last a little longer but can be a dealbreaker for some. They have varying opacity depending on the colour, with Twerkquoise falling on the sheerer end of the spectrum. A sheer sky blue lipgloss was always going to be tricky to pull off and unsurprisingly Twerkquoise is pretty unflattering on me, with a milkiness that makes its pulling into lip lines all the more obvious. Still, you've got to applaud MAC for giving these colours a try and as a topper, Twerkquoise still has potential. It wore for four hours on me and was lightly hydrating.
Play It Proper Beauty Powder
Housed in glossy pink compacts with pearlescent green shimmer, there are two shades of Beauty Powder (RRP $55NZD):
- Glow Rida (Soft beige sheen with extra fine gold reflects)
- Play It Proper (pictured)
How cute is that Troll imprint?! Seriously.
Play It Proper is described as a 'soft pastel pink with sparkles'. It's a very pale pink which blends in well with my skin tone (as evidenced by the above swatch!) and has very fine sheen running throughout. The colour pay off was sheer and even but quite buildable, with little to no emphasis of skin texture. It wore for eight hours on me.
MAC's Beauty Powders are touted as multi-use and what you use each shade for will depend on both your skin tone and the colour itself. Being so light and shimmery, Play It Proper is best suited as a highlighter for light to medium skin tones, or perhaps as a highlighting blush for the most porcelain of complexions.
This Beauty Powder is a repromote, having previously appeared in Chen Man Love & Water (2012) and Stylishly Yours (2010).
I'm wearing Play It Proper as a highlighter with Sea Me, Hear Me Extra Dimension blush and the Makeup Revolution contouring palette.
Sun's Out, Buns Out Eyeshadow
Five eyeshadows (RRP $42NZD) feature in this collection:
- Paradisco (bright pinky-coral with pearl in a Frost finish, repromote from permanent range)
- Black Tied (black with silver sparkle in a Velvet finish, repromote from permanent range)
- Silly Vanilly (white with very fine silver glitter in a Satin finish)
- Sun's Out, Buns Out (pictured)
- Atlantic Blue (cobalt blue in a Matte finish, repromote from permanent range)
Sun's Out, Buns Out is described as a 'mustard yellow with pearl' in a Veluxe Pearl finish. I generally find Veluxe Pearls to be among MAC's best eyeshadow finishes, with rich colour pay off, smooth shimmer and excellent texture and blendability, but Sun's Out, Buns Out, sadly let down the VP rep. The colour pay off is lacklustre and even when packed on over a primer it never seemed to reach the level of oomph that I desired. Although it's possible that I've been spoiled by indie eyeshadows of late... Sun's Out, Buns Out did blend well though and had a smooth texture with no fallout.
Reflects Transparent Teal
A selection of four glitters and a pigment (RRP $52 each) have been repromoted from the permanent range for this collection, so while you can get them anytime, they won't look quite as cute...
- Chartreuse Pigment (frosted chartreuse green)
- Fuchsia Glitter (fine fuchsia glitter)
- Reflects Transparent Teal (pictured)
- Reflects Purple Duo (very fine reflective violet glitter)
Reflects Transparent Teal is a very fine reflective teal glitter which flashes pink at extreme angles. I've always had a soft spot for MAC's Reflects Glitters as they're so finely milled and eye-catching without being overtly glittery. The downside to them is that they're not eye-safe; instead, MAC recommends them for face, body or hair although I tend to break the rules and use them on my eyes anyway. I have seen them used for highlighting the cheeks to great effect and they look really cool mixed with lipgloss, too!

For this look, I used Sun's Out, Buns Out on the inner third, Chartreuse pigment on the middle third and Humid on the outer third of the lid and lower lashline respectively. I also used Wedge on the crease, Manila Paper on the browbone and inner corner and Reflects Transparent Teal (rebel rebel) on the inner corner over Manila Paper. The lashes are from Born Pretty Store.
Dance Off, Pants Off Lipstick
Four lipsticks (RRP $44NZD) round off the makeup part of the collection and MAC have been particularly adventurous than usual by including blurple and lime coloured lipsticks among them:
- Can't Be Tamed (sheer lime yellow in a Cremesheen finish)
- Sushi Kiss (mid-tone coral cream in a Satin finish, repromoted from permanent range)
- Dance Off, Pants Off (pictured)
- Midnight Troll (rich blue in a Matte finish)
Dance Off, Pants Off is a frosted hot pink with a Frost finish. I still have my eye on Sushi Kiss, but I'm so stoked that MAC sent me this one as it's definitely my top pick in terms of wearability and personal taste. Dance Off, Pants Off has good colour payoff and wears for five hours on me without feathering or drying out my lips (particularly good news as MAC's Frosts are often drying on me!). It left behind moderate pink staining.
Good Luck Locks Chromacraze
There are two interesting additions to the collection in the form of the Chromacraze sprays (RRP $58NZD), which are temporary spray hair colours - you know, like the ones you used to beg your mum to let you buy at the pharmacy as a kid? Well, now you can buy it in a fancy can all on your own. While it's a fun idea, MAC's take doesn't really seem any different to those hallowed cans I coveted back in the day: after a few spritzes, I was left with a few sections of candyfloss pink, dull and slightly stiff hair. There are two shades, Good Luck Locks (bubblegum pink, pictured) and Tease And Thank You (bright cobalt blue) but at $58 a can, I'd stick with the hair chalk.
