The only thing that could make a holographic nail polish more heavenly is being inspired by the heavens themselves and that's just what Pretty Serious turned to for their holo collection. Consider Outer Space is a seven-piece collection that has been recently discontinued, so you can pick these beauties up at clearance prices, as long as you're quick! A big thanks to Kaz and the team for sending me these to swatch for you.
Formula overview:
Generally, I find Pretty Serious's formula to be slightly thicker than your average nail lacquer, not in a bad way as it is still easy to control - the word 'plush' comes to mind. A couple of these were a little thicker again and needed a lighter hand to avoid clumping. All of them are thirsty and need a generous layer or two of top coat to seal in the sparkle but they're also all very opaque - none needed more than two coats.
Hydra
Pretty Serious - Hydra, 2 coats + Essie Gel Setter
The shape of Hydra resembles a twisting snake, and features as such in some Greek myths. One myth associates it with a water snake that a crow served Apollo in a cup when it was sent to fetch water; Apollo saw through the fraud, and angrily cast the crow, cup, and snake, into the sky. It is also associated with the monster Hydra, with its many heads, killed by Hercules, represented in another constellation. According to legend, if one of the hydra's heads was cut off, two more would grow in its place. However, Hercules burned out the roots of the heads he severed to prevent them from growing again, and thus overcame the hydra.
This holographic red with hot pink shimmer will certainly turn heads. Many heads. Because, Hydra. Get it?
Isn't this the juiciest red nail polish you've ever seen? The semi-jelly base gives it the most delightful squish-factor and paired with an ultra-glossy top coat, it looks like a jewelled strawberry.
Please don't eat it though.
Hydra was easy to work with, being neither too thick nor too thin and not as top coat thirsty as some of the other shades.
Lyra
Pretty Serious - Lyra, 2 coats + Essie Gel Setter
In Greek mythology, Lyra represents the lyre of Orpheus. Made by Hermes from a tortoise shell, given to Apollo as a bargain, it was said to be the first lyre ever produced. Orpheus's music was said to be so great that even inanimate objects such as trees, streams, and rocks could be charmed. Joining Jason and the Argonauts, his music was able to quell the voices of the dangerous Sirens, who sang tempting songs to the Argonauts.
Could anything be more charming than this shimmery pink holographic?
Lyra is the kind of cool pink that would make Barbie green with envy! That holographic sparkle combined with the metallic pink base is blindingly awesome. It was a bit thicker than Hydra but still manageable.
Serpens
Pretty Serious - Serpens, 2 coats + Essie Good To Go
Asclepius once killed a snake, but the animal was subsequently resurrected after a second snake placed a revival herb on it before its death. As snakes shed their skin every year, they were known as the symbol of rebirth in ancient Greek society, and legend says Asclepius would revive dead humans using the same technique he witnessed.
Revive the grayest of days with this incredible green holographic with teal shimmer!
Ohhhh, Serpens, you are the stuff dreams are made of. Thinner than the preceding polishes and very easy to work with, Serpens flows onto the nails like a curve-hugging vintage gown. It makes me think of Dita Von Teese. I don't know why. But I dig it.
Pyxis
Pretty Serious - Pyxis, 2 coats + Essie Good To Go
In ancient Chinese astronomy, Alpha, Beta and Gamma Pyxidis formed part of Tianmiao, a celestial temple honouring the ancestors of the emperor, along with stars from neighbouring Antlia.
Honour the stars in this heavenly chartreuse holographic!
It's chartreuse! And it's holo! And gold! Oh my god. You guys are seeing this too, right? I've wanted a chartreuse holo for so long. The linear holo remains elusive but the scattered holo in Pyxis is blingy AF and I love it. It's closer to Hydra in terms of thickness, not as thick as Lyra, nor as thin as Serpens.
Dorado
Pretty Serious - Dorado, 2 coats + Essie Gel Setter
Dorado is a constellation in the southern sky. It was named in the late 16th century and is now one of the 88 modern constellations. Its name refers to the dolphinfish, which is known as dorado in Portuguese, although it has also been depicted as a swordfish.
This glittering golden orange holographic will certainly dazzle at high noon!
I can't see the name Dorado without flashing back to The Road To El Dorado and the many, many memes it spawned...
Not that that's a bad thing. This fiery orange is about the same viscosity as Lyra and smoothed out nicely with top coat (don't mind my index nail, which got a hair stuck in it. That was just me being a dingbat).
Ara
Pretty Serious - Ara, 2 coats + Essie Good To Go
In ancient Greek mythology, Ara was identified as the altar where the gods first made offerings and formed an alliance before defeating the Titans. The nearby Milky Way represents the smoke rising from the offerings on the altar.
This stunning blue holographic with aqua shimmer will shine brighter than any star in the sky!
Ara will easily win the hearts of blue lovers. It applies like Hydra and Pyxis, a little thicker than Serpens but still really easy to control. It reminds me of Nicole by OPI Me + Blue without the cringey Justin Bieber associations.
Carina
Pretty Serious - Carina, 2 coats + Essie Good To Go
Carina was once a part of Argo Navis, the great ship of Jason and the Argonauts who searched for the Golden Fleece. The constellation of Argo was introduced in ancient Greece.
This Purple Holographic with Violet shimmer will definitely not steer you in the wrong direction!
Carina is the thickest and thirstiest of the colours in this set but look at that sparkle! It's my ideal shade of purple. THE purple. Prince would fight you for this lacquer. I used one coat of Essie Good To Go top coat for this swatch but you can see on my middle nail that it wasn't quite thick enough, something like Essie Gel Setter or Pretty Serious Plump Up The Volume (I haven't tried the PS top coat myself but it gets good reviews).
My Immortal
Pretty Serious - My Immortal, 2 coats
Created as a gift for a friend of Pretty Serious, don't miss your chance to get your hands on this amazing cerulean blue with aqua green shimmer! Limited to only 300 units, this shade will never be reproduced!
This late shade is a surprise extra Kaz tucked into my parcel, their limited edition shade My Immortal! It's a dreamy, glowing shimmer which is nearly opaque in one coat and dries with a fair amount of shine, as you can see from the swatches. At the time of writing, there are only 48 bottles left so don't waste any time if you've fallen in love with it!
Which of these is your favourite? I'm finding it impossible to narrow down but Hydra and Serpens definitely top the list, closely followed by Pyxis.
