Where did April go, you guys? I feel like I've blinked and missed most of this month. As May (and my birthday!) rapidly approaches, I'm pleased to share another beautiful Femme Fatale Cosmetics collection with you. The Fire Lily collection is inspired by the Pellinor books, written by Australian author Alison Croggon. The fantasy series is not one I'm familiar with, but it's close to Femme Fatale creator Sophie's heart and she has pretty darn good taste, so I was intrigued to see how she'd interpret her theme when I read the collection info. One thing I really like about Femme Fatale is the diversity of their themes and inspirations - I love a pop culture-inspired collection as much as anyone else, but nods to treasured books and MMORPGs set FF apart from others.
The presale for this collection will be May 1st – 5th 2018 at 9am AEST.
Swatch Notes:
I do not use base coat for my swatches but I did use a top coat as many of the glitterbombs in particular dry with a fair bit of texture. Everything was photographed using a three-point lighting set up under daylight bulbs, except the final shots for all but Triple-Tongued, which were done with a two-point set up.
Fates Bound Together
Femme Fatale - Fates Bound Together, 3 coats + Essie Good To Go
Let's start with my favourite, shall we? Fates Bound Together is described as 'a blue (warm) to purple (cold) thermal with pink shift and red iridescent flakes.' This sublimely sensitive thermal is a bright contrast to the moody and icy tones that dominate this collection (not that that's a bad thing). It applies smoothly in three coats and is pretty smooth with a single layer of top coat.
Nameless One
Femme Fatale Nameless One, 3 coats + Essie Good To Go
Nameless One is described as 'a dark blue jelly filled with fiery red chrome flakes, reddish pigment, silver holographic glitters and the wannabe-Unicorn Pee pigment which flashes from red to green'. Loving the theme of the Unicorn Pee pigment in this collection, tying all the shades together! The sparkle and flakies in Nameless One warm even my blue-shy heart and it's mostly opaque in three coats. One layer of top coat is enough to seal in the sparkle.
The Mark of Darkness
Femme Fatale - The Mark of Darkness, 4 coats + Essie Good To Go
The Mark of Darkness is described as 'a gorgeous royal blue-toned purple base with a soft pink-green multichrome shifting glow'. Although Femme Fatale advise that opacity should be reached in three coats, I needed three, though I suspect my initial coat was on the thin side. If you tend towards thin coats too, you may need four coats or a heavier hand. Top coat is a must to highlight the glowing multichrome shimmer, which reminds me of Clarins 230.
Winterking
Femme Fatale Winterking, 3 coats + Essie Good To Go
Winterking is described as 'a wintry pearl white base with turquoise shine, filled with black holographic glitters and blue iridescent glitter accents.' Wintry is right - if I had the skill and patience for nail art, I think Winterking would make the perfect starting point for an Elsa-themed design. It builds to opacity spectacularly well for a white crelly, covering perfectly in three coats and although it dries with some texture, it was easy to smooth out. I love it.
Triple-Tongued
Femme Fatale - Triple-Tongued, 3 coats + Essie Good To Go
Triple-Tongued is described as 'an aged gold with a hint of olive'. This is absolutely gorgeous and not a shade I think we've seen in a nail polish from Femme Fatale before, though it calls to mind Choose Wisely eyeshadow. It applied very smoothly and was almost opaque in two coats but I added a third to be safe. A favourite for me.
Treesong
Femme Fatale Treesong, 3 coats + Essie Good To Go
Treesong is described as 'a warm-toned brown with the barest hint of a red shift, filled with an array of silver holographic particles, silver and gold holo glitters, green iridescent glitters, copper glitters, matte pastel pink glitters and more'. What a complex, unique mix this is! I cold have sworn the large glitters were white, the way that they contrast with the base colour makes them appear brighter than the pastel pink that they truly are. Treesong built up readily in three coats. This would make an interesting complex office-neutral (as long as your workplace allows glitter!).
Fire Lily
Femme Fatale - Fire Lily, 4 coats + Essie Good To Go
The eponymous Fire Lily is described as 'a warm version of The Mermaid’s Tail, Fire Lily is jam-packed full of red flakes and glitters into a slightly blue-tinted jelly base, rounded off with a bit of the wannabe-Unicorn Pee pigment that flashes from red to green'. Femme Fatale recommends 3-4 coats (less if you choose to sponge it on), which is in line with the four coats it took for me to build the jelly base to an opacity I was happy with. This is incredibly cool and very unique, I love the way the cool blue base contrasts with the fiery hues of the flakies. A stunning interpretation of the name.
Inner Dreaming
Femme Fatale - Inner Dreaming, 3 coats + Essie Good To Go
Inner Dreaming is described as 'a brown (cold) to clear (warm) thermal with pink glow and pink/purple to green shifting iridescent flakes'. This is gorgeous, although I must confess that I really prefer the warm state and wish it looked like it all the time! Inner Dreaming is a super responsive thermal, while the flakies colour-shift vividly as they catch the light. I found it very easy to build on the nail and one coat of top coat was sufficient to seal it.
Are any of these calling to you? My top picks are Fates Bound Together, Winterking and Triple-Tongued.
