This is a collection I've taken my sweet time posting about (it was released in 2012!) as it took me a number of years to complete my lipstick set. A collection with no less than four red lipsticks may seem excessive to some, but I know others will agree that you can never have too many red lipsticks! I'm also a big fan of Marilyn Monroe, so this collection is right up my alley. It sold out on counter really quickly at the time of launch and is still somewhat hard to find, but worth making the effort if you're a fan.
The packaging for this collection has a lot of attention to detail: glossy black with Marilyn as photographed by Milton Greene and red kiss prints inside the boxes. The prints have held up perfectly over the years, too, there has been no scratching or fading.
Formula Overview:
There are three lipstick finishes in this collection: a Cremesheen (Pure Zen), a Satin (Love Goddess) and the three Mattes (Scarlet Ibis, Charmed I'm Sure and Deeply Adored). Mattes are generally richly pigmented and have a smooth, velvety texture which I don't typically find drying although not everyone feels the same. Cremesheens are semi-opaque, glossy and sometimes hydrating while Satins have a semi-matte finish with all the opacity of a Matte. MAC lipsticks have a vanilla scent.
Pure Zen
Pure Zen is described as a 'frosted warm nude' and has a Cremesheen finish. If you just turned up your nose at the mention of frost, first of all - you're not alone, that's my natural reaction too, BUT you can relax. There's no frostiness in sight, only very fine and subtle shimmer. This is such a pretty shade, I really like it! It wore for three and a half hours on me and was not drying. This is a repromote from the permanent collection.
Scarlet Ibis
Scarlet Ibis is described as a 'bright orange red' and has a Matte finish. This is a repromote from the Iris Apfel collection. The colour payoff is rich and velvety; MAC's Matte formula at its best. It lasted five hours on me and was comfortable and non-drying during the course of wear.
Love Goddess
Love Goddess is described as a 'mid-tone pink red' and has a Satin finish. My sister bought me this one so it will always have a special place in my heart! It's slightly more translucent than the Mattes but still wonderfully vivid and lasts five hours on me without drying or feathering. It does stain pink, though.
Charmed, I'm Sure
Charmed I’m Sure is described as a 'dark true red' and has a Matte finish. This is absolutely my favourite from the collection! It has a subtle berry tone that distinguishes it from my arsenal of reds and it wears like iron - seven and a half hours, all up.
Deeply Adored
Deeply Adored is described as a 'deep scarlet' and has a Matte finish. It's a bit more uneven than the other Mattes in the collection although I didn't notice it from a normal viewing distance. It lasted six and a half hours on me with very slight feathering.
What I liked:
- Great colour payoff
- Lasted between four and six hours
- Non drying
- Deeply Adored was slightly patchy
- Deeply adored feathered a bit
