Lime Crime Velvetine - Utopia Swatches & Review

I've got to hand it to Lime Crime's marketing skills. Despite having mixed experiences with their previous Velvetines, after months of them posting teasers for Utopia, the minute it was released I ordered it, ignoring the howling protests of my wallet.

I do enjoy the Velvetine packaging; the frosted glass and graphic rose print is simple but beautiful. The applicator is a small doe-foot that spreads the thin formula fairly evenly. I do sometimes find the doe-foot a little too fluffy, which prevents me from getting as crisp a line as I would like sometimes.

Utopia is a warm orchid purple with good colour pay off. You can apply it lightly and the red tones will come through more strongly (as in the arm swatch and first FOTD) or more heavily and it will pull a bit purpler (lip swatch and the second FOTD). 

The Velvetine is formula is thin and almost watery, but not so much so that it's difficult to control. The fluidity makes it easy to apply even layers without it tugging at or balling up on itself the way some liquid matte lipsticks can do. 

Utopia wears for around six hours on me and is very comfortable to wear, it doesn't dry out my lips or make them feel tight. The Velvetines have a sweet, artificial scent which sort of reminds me of Play-Doh at times - it's not a strong smell, it's just something that makes me pause now and then and go 'What IS that?'. I really love this colour, I don't think I have anything else like it!

What I liked:

• Great colour pay off
• Non drying
• Doesn't crack, fade or feather
• Wears for 6 hours +

What I didn't like:

• I sometimes get a slight hint of a Play-Doh scent, which is a bit bizarre.
