Fyrinnae Lip Lustre - Pygmy Hippo, Sexy Nerd, Fashion Disaster, Demon's Desire Swatches & Review

Fyrinnae were one of my first big indie loves and my favourite products from them have always been their Lip Lustres. When there was tentative mention of discontinuing them on the Fyrinnae website, I sort of panicked and thought I'd better start chipping away at my wishlist! They were pulled briefly for reformulation a few weeks back and are now back up, so fingers crossed this means they are here to stay. That being said, the formula I have may no longer entirely match what Fyrinnae are now producing, so bear that in mind.

Swatched on bare skin under daylight bulbs

From Fyrinnae's website:

This unique product is a non-sticky lipcolour, nearly as solid as lipstick, leaving rich colour on your lips but no goopy tackiness. They are a rather "dry" product because we pack as much colour into them as possible, but the ingredients are not drying. This means, due to the high concentration of natural butters, they are thinner in a warm environment, thicker when it's cool, but are a solid product. Use care when opening if they have been cold (i.e; in a mailbox in winter). They are filled hot, then the product cools, hardening, the moment the tubes are filled, so they may have the appearance of cracks or tiny lines of air in the tube. Lustres have a slight vanilla scent.

Lip Lustres come in a lipgloss style tube and contain 8ml of product. The doefoot applicator is small and pointed so that it's easy to outline your lip shape precisely and it does a serviceable job of applying colour, though I do wish it was a little wider so that it could deposit more colour at once.

Because the Lip Lustres are so sensitive to temperature, when they are cold I find I have to dip the applicator over and over to pick up enough product. I highly recommend warming the Lip Lustres in the crook of your arm for a few minutes before application if the climate is cool where you are. When I did this it made the whole application process infinitely easier.

Although Fyrinnae say they are not drying, I did find most of these Lip Lustres to be at least slightly drying and occasionally clingy. Colour pay off is mostly opaque to completely opaque depending on the shade and they don't feather or migrate. The wear time is definitely on the short time, with all of these lasting between three and four hours.

Fyrinnae Lip Lustre - Pygmy Hippo Swatches & Review

Pygmy Hippo is described as a 'medium rosey neutral plum shade'. I adore this shade! It's surprisingly unique in my collection and very flattering. Pygmy Hippo wore for three hours on me and felt a bit clingy, but was not drying.

Sexy Nerd is a 'bright purple-magenta, filled with gold shimmer'. It applied smoothly and wore for four and half hours, gradually fading to a stain and was minimally drying.

Fashion Disaster is described as a 'bright cool pink, leaning toward "Azalea Pink", with a touch more purple'. This one definitely needed to be warmed up before application as it was on the sheer side, but builds up to a nice level of opacity. Fashion Disaster wore for four hours on me and was mostly a stain towards the end of wear, it was also slightly drying.

Demon's Desire

Fyrinnae Lip Lustre - Demon's Desire Swatches & Review

Demon's Desire is described as 'glowing red shimmer embedded in a semi-transparent dark base'. This is totally mesmerising and I love the final effect, but it was very sheer and the pictured swatch was three or four layers. It did improve somewhat when warmed, and it would probably be better again layered over a co-ordinating lip liner, but it's a lot of effort - whether or not it's worth it is up to you! Demon's Desire lasted for four hours on me, was slightly drying and left a faint murky grey tint after the colour had all worn away.

What I liked:
  • Most shades had great colour pay off
  • Applies smoothly
  • Pygmy Hippo was not drying
  • Most shades wore between three and four hours
What I didn't like:
  • Demon's Desire was sheer and took a lot of layering
  • Demon's Desire, Fashion Disaster and Sexy Nerd are minimally drying
  • Pygmy Hippo was clingy
Where to buy:

Which of these shades is your favourite? Have you tried Fyrinnae's Lip Lustres?
