Darling Girl Wicked Is Coming Collection Swatches & Review

I'm so happy that the Darling Girl site is open again as they've been one of my favourite indie brands for several years now! Today I thought I'd dig out the Wicked Is Coming collection, which is one of three collections Susan has released based on the TV show Once Upon A Time (a major guilty pleasure of mine!). 

Darling Girl's eyeshadows come in a few different sizing options: full sizes are packaged in 5g jars with approximately 3/4 tsp of product ($7USD). Petits are packaged in 3g jars with approximately 1/4 tsp of product ($3.25USD). You can also try a sample set, which includes 4 shades of your choosing in baggies, each containing 1/8th tsp for $5USD. I've gone down that route many times as you can get samples of any eyeshadows, Diamond Dusts, Spectral Shifts or loose blushes, excellent if you want a great cross section of colours and formulas to try!

Formula overview:
Darling Girl's eyeshadow formula is incredibly consistent. I've never come across a dud in the range; they are, on the whole, very pigmented and easy to work with. Some shades, especially the more glittery ones perform best over a sticky base but can certainly be used on their own.

Swatch notes:
All eyeshadow swatches in this post are done two ways: applied on bare skin on the left hand side and over Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy, a sticky eyeshadow base which maximises colour intensity and sparkle, on the right. This is so you can see how they perform both ways. I take all of my photos with daylight bulbs for colour accuracy.

Dearie

 

Dearie is described as a 'rich burnished gold [with] gold and green iridescence'. It's a true molten gold; intense, metallic and glowy beyond belief. If you love golds, you need to hop in a TARDIS and get this in your life yesterday because it's AMAZING. You'll get the strongest effect when layered over a sticky base, as I've done on the lid in the makeup look below, but I used it alone on the lower lashline and you can see that it's still very metallic when applied dry. 

As a side note, Robert Carlyle's performance as Rumpelstiltskin is one of the factors that first got me to give the show a chance - I have this irrational and unfounded dislike of Jennifer Morrison (I even feel bad writing that because there is literally no reason for it!) which had put me off watching it. But the variation and depth Rumpelstiltskin's character brings kept me coming back, especially in the earlier seasons!

I paired Dearie with shades from the original Chi Chi Extravaganza palette and false lashes from  Born Pretty Store (use code LR10K31 for 10% off) for this look. 

Love Is Weakness

Love is Weakness is described as a 'rich burgundy with gold and blue iridescence', which sums it up perfectly. Over a sticky base, the burgundy becomes more pronounced and metallic, while applied dry, the dark base colour is more apparent so it's really quite a nuanced shadow. I used it over a sticky base on the lid below and smudged out dry over liner on the lower lashline in the look below.

This shade is inspired by Cora, the Queen of Hearts and mother of Regina Mills (the Evil Queen). She's one of the most ruthless characters (and definitely one of the worst parents) on the show and yet you can't help but love her. 

I used Love Is Weakness on the outer third of the lid and outer half of the lower lashline with Moon Dust Diamond Dust on the remainder of the lid/lower lashline, Hot As Baelfire on the crease and If I Only Had A Heart on the inner corner. The lashes are Ardell Demi Wispies. I'm also wearing Drop Dead Red Pucker Paint in the look below (reviewed here).

The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up

The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up is described as 'muted olive green with pink multicolored shimmer and a golden sheen'. I can't say I really see much of the pink multicolored shimmer mentioned but it is nonetheless, a pretty shade that works well alone or over a base. 

I really enjoyed Once Upon A Time's twist on the Peter Pan story and Robbie Kay was wonderfully malevolent as the boy who wouldn't grow up - at any cost. 

Here I've used The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up on the outer half of the lid, Shattered on the inner half of the lid and on the inner corner, #breaktheinternet for the transition and Kilt-y Pleasures on the crease. I also used Let's Hook Up over smoked out liner on the lower lashline. The lashes are, once again, Ardell Demi Wispies. The lip combo I'm wearing is a combination of Ambrosia Salad and Dodgy Pucker Paints (both sadly discontinued) with Mellow Peaches Spectral Shift patted over the centre.
