MAC Toledo - Oxblood Lipglass and Sin Lipstick Swatches & Review

Provided for review

Hey lovelies,

I'm so excited to share swatches & a review of two products from MAC's Toledo collection with you today, which launched nationwide at the beginning of the week. You can find the press release with information on availability in New Zealand, prices and so forth here. I still have the remaining lipsticks in the collection on their way to me via the States so will show you those as soon as I can, but for now please enjoy Oxblood lipglass and Sin lipstick :)

MAC Toledo - Oxblood Lipglass and Sin Lipstick Swatches & Review

I have to admit, I didn't think I'd like the packaging for this collection as much as I do until I saw it in person. It's very graphic and bold and the plastic of the products itself has a soft, rubbery coating akin to NARS.

MAC Toledo - Oxblood Lipglass Swatches & Review

Oxblood is the colour that has had everyone's heart beating a little bit faster in this collection, both in lipstick and lipgloss form! When I visited the Wellington MAC counter on Thursday, Oxblood lipstick had just sold out, so if it's a shade you've had your eye on I definitely recommend calling around the MAC stores to try and get it before it's gone.
What makes it so special? Well, it's probably not terribly unique in the scheme of things, but it is a gorgeous pinky nude which will flatter a lot of complexions. I'm not usually big on lipgloss, but I really, really LOVE this. The very small amount of settling into lip-lines you can see going on in the swatch isn't noticeable in real life and it just comes off as an opaque, glossy, 'my lips but better' shade. Definitely the kind of shade you can throw on with any makeup combination and know it'll look good, which makes it perfect to slick on as I'm running out the door!
MAC lipglasses have a vanilla scent, which may or may not be your jam (it's definitely mine) and are thicker than your average gloss formula with noticeable tackiness. I've never loved the tackiness but I can tolerate it and it does help the formula to stay on. Oxblood wore for four hours on me, after which the colour had mostly faded but some balmy shine remained and the colour of my own lips still looked more even from the leftover veil of colour. It was also lightly hydrating.

MAC Toledo - Sin Lipstick Swatches & Review

Sin is another shade that had already sold out at the Wellington counter when I visited. It surprised and amused me that this was one of the first shades to sell out during both the Toledo and Rocky Horror launches, as it is a permament shade and has been around for years. It's stuck around and remained popular for good reason, of course - it's absolutely stunning and an absolute must have for any vampy lip lover!
I originally reviewed Sin when it was repromoted with last year's Rocky Horror collection (you can read the full review here) - here is a recap:
Sin is a deep burgundy with a Matte finish. The texture is a touch drier than the standard Matte formula and tugged a little during application, though not as much as the Retro Mattes do. Despite the drier texture, the formula wasn't too drying overall, becoming minimally drying after three hours wear. Sin stubbornly clung on for seven hours without feathering or migrating. MAC lipsticks have a vanilla scent.

What I liked:
  • Sin has fantastic colour pay off
  • Sin wears for seven hours
  • Really cool packaging
  • Oxblood has even, opaque colour pay off
  • Oxblood is minimally hydrating
  • Oxblood wears for four hours
What I didn't like:
  • Sin has a slightly dry texture and tugs a little bit during application.
  • Sin is slightly drying after three hours
Where to buy:

Will you be picking anything up from the Toledo collection? Have you already? I'd love to hear about it!

  1. Major regret for not getting anything from this collection at the cheap American pricing, I really want the Oxblood lipstick & the lipglass!

  2. If you check the US MAC groups on Facebook they have been selling for around $25USD - still a bit cheaper than here :) Especially if you can get someone to bundle them!
