Lime Crime Velvetines - Riot and Rave Swatches & Review

Purchased by me/Contains affiliate links

Hey lovelies,

Whatever your opinion of Lime Crime is, most makeup lovers can't deny that they make great lipsticks. I have two of their newer Velvetines to show you today, Rave and Riot. Rave is a limited edition shade but is still available on their website. I used Paypal to make my order and no troubles whatsoever - in fact, I've never had any issues with the company. Unfortunately this isn't the case for all of their customers. As with any purchase you make, I would strongly encourage you to personally research a company and make a decision for yourself, rather than jumping on a bandwagon. I'm reviewing the lipsticks, not the company today so please keep this in mind when commenting.

Velvetines come boxed with labels that match the lipstick colour inside. The tubes are composed of frosted glass and metallic red caps adorned with pink roses. The doefoot applicator inside is small and well shaped to easily outline and fill in the lips.

Velvetines are liquid lipsticks that dry to a flat matte finish. They have a thin, somewhat runny texture but are easy enough to control. If you're not too confident with the doefoot applicator, you may find it easier to use a lip brush (scooping product from the top of the tube or the wand) to outline your lips first and then fill them in with the applicator.
My personal favourite application method is to apply two thin coats, ensuring the first coat has dried completely before beginning the second. I have found that other Velvetine shades can become cakey if you layer them very quickly or if your application is on the thick side, so this method seems to work well for me to prevent this.
As with all matte lipsticks, Velvetines will highlight uneven or flaky lip texture. Hydrated and exfoliated lips are a must for them to look their best. Both Rave and Riot have a sweet vanilla cake scent.

Rave is described as an 'electric lavender' and it's exactly that! Neon pastel purple that's so bright it's practically jumping off my face. I love it and am not sure that I can pull it off all at once. Perhaps if I shaded the edges with a medium purple lip liner to give it a bit more depth? Hm.
Great colour pay off - this was two thin layers. Rave wore for seven hours and I didn't have any issues with drying. During that time I had some food and there was some wear to the center and rim of my lower lip but my upper lip still looked perfect when I removed it at the end of the night.

Riot is described as 'marsala'. It's a warm rosy brown. This shade was a bit of a wild card purchase and I really wasn't sure that it would suit me at all but I adore it! I don't own anything like it. Amazing colour pay off and application, this was one coat.
I got six hours wear out of Riot and it was minimally drying toward the end of wear.
