Notoriously Morbid Mystic Mattes Swatches & Review

Notoriously Morbid's Mystic Mattes just keep going from strength to strength, with heaps of new colours released last year and a special monthly subscription this year. I just can't get enough of them and clearly, I'm in good company there! The Burnt Flowers Fallen collection, a tribute to Type O Negative's 1996 album "October Rust", was released last September and I picked up most of the collection (Druidess and Bloody Kisses will be covered in another post). I'm not familiar with the band but I love the colours! I opted to get all but Sanguine Addiction in duo form, however, this packaging is unfortunately no longer available. Instead, you can purchase a full-size tube (7ml, $12USD) or a sample tube (3.5ml, $4.50USD). Esoteric isn't actually part of the Burnt Flowers Fallen collection, it's part of the regular range, but whatevs. I snapped it up at the same time as the others so why not bung it in there 😂

Formula overview:
These liquid mattes are among the easiest I've used to date, with a thin but easy to control formula and great opacity. Most are opaque in one coat, though they can be layered easily if needed (with the exception of Esoteric, details in a bit) and will not clump, streak or stick to themselves. There's no need to keep your lips parted while they dry, as many formulas require, because of the non-tackiness and fairly quick dry-down, yet they never fully set. You'll still get transfer with the Mystic Mattes, although obviously less than a creamy lipstick, and they tend to wear away evenly like a regular lipstick, instead of mostly in the centre, as I often experience with liquid mattes.
I did not find any of these shades drying, although I have found that to be the case with some other shades in the range. I did not experience any feathering or bleeding with any of them, they can be smudged if touched or smeared, but will not otherwise migrate. They have a faintly sweet scent.

Nocturnal Mistress is described as a 'metallic dark navy blue'. Wow, I did not expect to love this as much as I do! The formula is impeccable, very opaque and smooth, and the colour has the added bonus of making me feel like a total badass. Nocturnal Mistress lasted seven hours on me and wasn't drying.

Go Go Trance

Go Go Trance is described as a 'pink raspberry with purple and blue sparkles'. Wonderfully sparkly without being overly frosted, this really has to be seen in real life - I love it! It's mostly opaque in a single layer and easy to build up, it doesn't cake or streak, so the additional layer's no worries for me. Go Go Trance lasted eight hours on me and wasn't drying.

Esoteric

Esoteric is described as a 'periwinkle blue with slight shimmer'. Esoteric is the first Mystic Matte I've really had trouble with, which is a shame as the colour is incredibly unique. It's not fully opaque in a single layer and is prone to sheering out when layered; the colour also shifts around a bit, which contributed to the overall patchy appearance. The wear time was great though, eight hours without drying out my lips.

Burnt Flowers is described as a 'burnt highly metallic orange copper'. Another stunner! The formula is akin to Go Go Trance's, it needs two layers for full opacity but layers up beautifully. It wore for seven hours on me and wasn't drying.

Beast Inside is described as a 'warm brown with a shifting pink/violet duochrome'. This has got to be one of the most unique and mesmerising shades I own. The colour payoff is great and the colour shift is easy to see in varying lighting conditions, you'll be tilting your head around mirrors constantly to watch it change! It applied smoothly and opaquely in one layer and wore for seven hours on me.

Wiccan Friend is described as a 'dark matte emerald green'. It's the dark green lipstick I never knew I needed until I saw it. Because LOOK at it! Isn't it divine? And far more wearable than you'd think, right? Wiccan Friend has excellent colour payoff (it looks a little patchy in the closeup, but this wasn't noticeable in real life in the slightest) and wears for eight hours on me. It does stain a bit, although I was able to remove the stain with bi-phase makeup remover.

13 Black Rainbows is described as having a 'black base, blue sheen, rainbow shifting sparkles'. It's like an oil slick in lipstick form, absolutely gorgeous! I needed two layers for opacity but it was no trouble to layer and anyway, a little sheerness is necessary for all that heart-stopping sparkle. It lasted for eight hours on me.

Sanguine Addiction is described as 'a matte blue based cherry pink red'. Just when I thought I'd run out of variations of red to sink my teeth into, Notoriously Morbid do the impossible and bring out a unique red! I can't think of any dupes and that's not the newborn related sleep deprivation talking! Sanguine Addiction is boldly pigmented, applies easily and lasts for seven hours on me. Like the others, it wasn't drying.

What I liked:
  • Almost all of them had great colour payoff
  • All but Esoteric were easy to layer to full opacity
  • Non-drying formula
  • Wear time ranged between seven and eight hours.
What I didn't like:
  • Esoteric was difficult to apply evenly
