Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick - Lovely and Sad Girl Swatches & Review

Anastasia Beverly Hills' liquid lipsticks have become one of the heavyweight formulas in a world now rife with liquid mattes so it was only a matter of time before curiosity got the better of me and I had to give them a try. They're one of the more expensive options out there at $20USD a pop, so how did they measure up?

Formula overview:
Anastasia Beverly Hill's liquid lipstick formula is thin and lightweight with a fairly quick dry down period - around thirty seconds. Opacity varies depending on the colour but they're generally pretty well pigmented, with shimmery shades like Sad Girl being sheerer by necessity to show the sparkle. The more neon and white-based colours are more prone to streaking, a common issue across liquid lipstick formulas and not specific to ABH. I don't find this formula drying. Their scent is a little chemical, vaguely sweet, but not too offensive.

Lovely (discontinued) is a nude pink with subtle cool undertones. I suppose with as many shades as Anastasia Beverly Hills have in their range (there are currently 30) some eventually had to get the boot, but I wish Lovely had stayed - it's such a pretty, wearable pink! It's ever so slightly streaky but not really noticeable from a normal viewing distance. Lovely lasted five hours on me without being drying. MAC Please Me is a similar shade.

Sad Girl is described as a 'metallic black cherry'. It's sheer, patchy and requires some serious patience to build up on its own (save yourself some time and layer it with a lip liner) but my goodness, the final effect is phenomenal. It lasted six hours on me and wasn't drying.

What I liked:
  • Lovely has good colour pay off
  • Lasted between five and six hours
  • Non drying formula
  • They don't crack, crumble or migrate
What I didn't like:
  • Sad Girl is patchier than your grandmother's handmade quilt
  • Lovely streaks slightly
Where to buy:
I liked these overall, but there are definitely formulas I prefer over them, especially at the $20USD price point. Have you tried Anastasia Beverly Hills' liquid lipsticks? Are you a fan?
