Hey guys! I've got another set of Maybelline lipsticks to share with you, this time it's the Loaded Bolds collection. I thought there was a navy blue lipstick in this range too but I think that might have been limited edition or only overseas, as the shades I have here form the complete lineup according to Maybelline NZ's website.
Formula Overview:
The Loaded Bolds feel very similar to Maybelline's Creamy Matte and Inti-Matte Nudes formulas, they're very lightweight, fairly emollient and feel cushiony on the lips. This isn't your classic stiff, drying matte formula. They have a sweet, faintly candy-like fragrance which isn't overpowering to my nose, but it might be worth giving one a sniff before purchasing if you dislike fragranced cosmetics.
Gone Greige
Gone Greige is a dirty cool greige (grey + beige). It's well-pigmented, applies smoothly and lasts six hours on me. I do wish I found this shade easier to wear as it's different and quite fun but as it is, I need to pair it with a lot of warm tones to make it work on my warm-neutral complexion.
Chocoholic
Chocoholic is a medium reddened brown with mostly opaque colour coverage. I found it was prone to disappearing or shifting around at the center of my lips, which dampened my enthusiasm for an otherwise lovely colour. Chocoholic lasted six hours on me.
Midnight Merlot
Midnight Merlot is a deep berry red. It shared Chocoholic's migration issues and delivered a somewhat patchy application; mostly opaque but prone to clinging to any flakes and sheering out in other areas. It's an awesome colour so I was pretty bummed by this one! Midnight Merlot lasted six hours.
Dynamite Red
Dynamite Red is a bright, retro red with subtle warm leanings. This, THIS is the formula I wanted from Chocholic and Midnight Merlot - we know you have it in you, Maybelline! Dynamite Red is creamy, pigmented and lasts seven hours on me without being drying. It also garnered several comments when I wore it which definitely put it in my good books!
Orange Danger
Orange Danger is a bright red-orange. It doesn't really show in my application, but I found it slightly sheerer than Dynamite Red, though still a heck of a lot better than Chocoholic and Midnight Merlot. It applied smoothly and was comfortable to wear, lasting six hours without being drying. My 'meh' face in the full face swatch is down to the dry hair, not the lipstick formula. Yowsers.
Fiery Fuchsia
Fiery Fuchsia is a saturated medium fuchsia-pink and it's right up there with Dynamite Red in terms of formula. Super smooth, pigmented and long-lasting, with a wear time of seven hours. It reminds me quite a lot of MAC Good Kisser.
Berry Bossy
Berry Bossy is a purple-tinged berry shade. It applied evenly and smoothly but was only semi-opaque, leaving me wanting more, and not in a lascivious romance novel way. It clocked in at just under six hours but was clingy for the duration and became quite drying towards the end of wear.
Blackest Berry
Blackest Berry is a dark purple. I think you can glean from the swatch that the prognosis is not good. Blackest Berry is sheer and patchy and stains pink (although not as strongly or immediately as some similar purples I've tried). It lasted just under six hours, was clingy and quite drying towards the end of wear. Just no.
What I liked:
- Dynamite Red, Gone Greige and Fiery Fuchsia had excellent colour payoff (Orange Danger was slightly sheerer but still pretty good).
- Wear time was between five and seven hours.
- Most shades were comfortable and non-drying.
- Most shades applied smoothly.
- Blackest Berry and Berry Bossy were clingy throughout and drying towards the end of wear.
- Blackest Berry, Chocoholic and Midnight Merlot were uneven, patchy or emphasised flakes.
- Blackest Berry and Berry Bossy are sheerer than advertised.
Do any of these tickle your fancy? I wanted to love them all but couldn't help feeling let down, Fiery Fuchsia and Dynamite Red were the only ones I really loved and would wear again.
