Notoriously Morbid January 2016 Vanishing Cabinet Swatches & Review

Well, I got some momentum going for a while there with the Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet posts and then I got stuck again! Winter bugs, sick children, manflu-ridden husband, canker sores, teething baby - the past few months have gone by in a haze and I suddenly find myself on the cusp of August. When did that happen? I'm determined to get back into the swing of things though, and I did just that by channelling Cheryl West from one of my all-time favourite TV shows, Outrageous Fortune, in my makeup look for Authority Problem. It was the last eyeshadow I had to use for this set and as I looked at it, I thought both the name and smokey hue were perfectly suited to the matriarch determined to escape a life of crime, but somehow always managing to eff it up a bit. 

These were all limited edition but Carrie from Notoriously Morbid has recently started bringing back previous Vanishing Cabinet shades for a month at a time (Misery Loves Company from this set made a recent return), so you never know what might be resurrected. The Mystik Spiral scent isn't available in the Night Kiss Balms anymore but can be found in the Slumber Salve range instead.

The Vanishing Cabinet is a monthly subscription service from US-based indie brand Notoriously Morbid. The amount of products included seems to vary, but there are typically three to five products in each. All swatches are applied to bare skin (on the left) and over Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy (on the right) using a patting motion and photographed under daylight bulbs. 

The theme for the January 2016 VC was Daria, a show I must admit I've not seen - I think it was a bit before my time, but it sounds like I've been missing out and I'm going to remedy that ASAP!

Authority Problem

Authority Problem is a smokey shimmering taupe peppered with golden sparkles. It's very pigmented, easy to blend and the sparkle adheres well. I honestly don't know how it took me so long to try it! 

I've used Authority Problem all over the lid and lower lashline for this look, with Each Buries His Own on the crease, Bloody Awful Poet on the outer V, He's Going Through Changes to blend out and Whitelighter Witch highlighter on the inner corner. The lashes are these Ebay faux mink lashes in style 15.

I'm also wearing Music blush and Whitelighter Witch on cheeks, along with Stay Evil, Dollface Mystic Matte in the picture below. 

Only Child

Only Child is an interesting mixture, with a warm brown base and fuchsia sparkles. Over a sticky base, the fuchsia overpowers the base colour almost completely. I didn't expect that, so the look below didn't come out quite how I had in mind, but that's the way things go sometimes! It was a breeze to work with, I just need to change the shadows I pair it with next time. 

I've used Boe on the outer half of the lid and lower lashline here, with Only Child on the inner half of lid and lower lashline, Autumn Moon highlighter on the inner corner, Doll's Eye on the crease and He's Going Through Changes for the transition. The lashes are these faux mink ones from Ebay in the style 208.

I Hate You

I Hate You is a warm-toned dark brown with emerald green shimmer and it is STUNNING. I really hope this makes a return some day because it's a great alternative to shades like MAC Blue Brown, if you find the base colour of Blue Brown too ruddy. Skunk Ape from the permanent range has a similar vibe but has a more orange base. This is a shade you'll get the most impact from over a sticky base but it performs well on its own, too.

Here I used Skunk Ape on the lower lashline, I Hate You on the lid, Mister Unlucky (November 2015 VC) on the crease, He's Going Through Changes for the transition and He's Not Coming to the Meeting (What We Make in the Shadows Black Friday 2015 collection) on the inner corner. The lashes are these ones from Born Pretty Store and the eye pencil is MAC Chlorafill.

Misery Loves Company

Misery Loves Company is a blackened slate blue with vivid crimson shimmer. The base colour is not the sort I gravitate to so Misery stumped me for a while before I decided to pair it with Animal (unfortunately now discontinued), a soft ivory that blended beautifully into Misery Loves Company's base colour. It was easy to work with and is another one I highly recommend putting over a sticky base so that you can see that contrasting shimmer come to life! 

I used Misery Loves Company on the outer half of the lid, Animal on the inner half of the lid and inner corner, Under Controlled Circumstances on the crease, He's Going Through Changes and She's Got Gidget Hair to blend out, It's the White Hats on the browbone and The Shadder on the lower lashline. The lashes are these faux mink ones from Ebay in the style A10.

Mystik Spiral

I'm pretty sure Mystik Spiral was the first Night Kiss balm I finished, even with it being a mini - I LOVED the scent and couldn't get enough of it! It's white chocolate dipped waffle cone, a very moreish scent for bakery fragrance lovers like myself. Although it's not available in the permanent range of Night Kiss Balms, you can get this scent in the Slumber Salves instead, and you better believe I snapped one up quickly! It's the most luscious treat before bed that I can get away with after brushing my teeth. 

All in all, I liked most of this VC and as always, the colours pushed me to get creative. What do you think of them?
