ColourPop Mama's Apple Pie Quad Swatches & Review

Man, I am crushing on ColourPop's new Pink and Nectar collections at the moment. It's taking a serious amount of willpower to resist them, but I've still got a few things to review from my recent hauls and I've been having a lot of fun playing with them. The lovely set I have to show you today was a Christmas present from my husband who knows my penchant for adorable packaging - it's the Mama's Apple Pie quad from the Hello Kitty collaboration! This quad, along with a smattering of other items from the collection is still available on the site but it's on Last Call so if you want it, you'll need to be quick.

Formula overview:
ColourPop's Super Shock Shadows have a malleable consistency like wet clay - should you press a finger into the eyeshadow you'll leave a hollow, it doesn't spring back or cling like a mousse, nor does it resist like a cream or powder. And of course, it's endlessly amusing to prod at! Because of the wetness of the formula, it is important to keep the lid tightly shut to prevent the product drying out. Even so, they have a fairly short official shelf life, with ColourPop advising that their eyeshadows will last three years unopened and a year after being opened. I've now had these for over a year and there appears to be no difference in quality than when I first got them, so it seems ColourPop are being pretty conservative.

There are eight different finishes in the SuperShock range: Ultra-Glitter, Glitter Sheer, Satin, Matte, Metallic, Ultra-Metallic, Pearlized and Pressed Pigments. The Mama's Apple Pie quad contains a mixture of Pearlized, Glitter Sheer and Metallic finishes
The Metallics are pretty much what they sound like: a super sparkly base, often with the addition of the glitter. The Pearlized shades have varying degrees of shimmer and it's finer than in the Metallics or Ultra-Metallics. The Ultra-Glitters have sheerer base colours than the other formulas and are absolutely loaded with glitter.
All of ColourPop's eyeshadows wear like iron on me, I can always rely on them to stay all day without creasing.

Packaging:
The term 'quad' might lead you to think that these come in a palette but the Super Shock Shadow formula will dry out if not housed in their screwtop jars. What you actually get are the four eyeshadow pots in a box with a slide off cover.

Rainbow is described as 'white with highlights of silver and pink glitter'. It has a Glitter Sheer finish and is perfect for a glitzy inner corner highlight or layering over other shadows for extra sparkle. I really like this one!

Small Gift

Small Gift is described as a 'mid-tone peachy pink' in a Pearlized finish. I don't think I have anything like this, it's so pretty! The colour payoff and texture are true to form for the Pearlized shadows, no complaints here.

I used Small Gift on the outer half of the lid here, with Smash on the crease and lower lashline, Kennedy for the transition, Keeper on the outer V, Cheap Date on the inner half of the lid and Femme Fatale Kitten Mittens on the inner corner. The lashes are Ardell Demi Wispies.

Friendship File is described as a 'warm peachy beige dusted with silver and pink glitter in a Metallic finish. Being a total fiend for warm neutrals, you know this is my favourite in the quad! It's super sparkly and the colour payoff and application are excellent. I'll be reaching for this again and again.

School Bus

School Bus is described as a 'deep navy blue' and has a Pearlized finish. It was kind of always doomed to be the problem child of the set for me, as navy blue really isn't my thing, but I did end up enjoying it more than I thought I would by using it as a liner in the look below. I found it on the sheer side and it applied patchily when I swatched it, it also took a lot of building to reach a level of opacity I was happy with for the liner. Actually, I kind of gave up by the time I got to the wing, although I liked the softened wing effect once I was done - go figure!

Here I used Elixir for the transition and on the lower lashline, Bandit on the crease, Friendship File on the lid, Rainbow on the inner corner, The One on the browbone and School Bus as eyeliner. The lashes are Ardell Demi Wispies.

What I liked:
  • Most shades had great colour payoff
  • Easy to apply and blend
  • No fallout
  • Incredibly long-wearing, I experience no creasing or fading with this formula
What I didn't like:
  • School Bus was sheer and patchy
Where to buy:
What do you think of the Mama's Apple Pie quad?
