ColourPop Ultra Matte, Metallic & Satin Lips - Knotty, Perky, Wild Nothing, Surprise & Wink Swatches & Review

ColourPop's Last Call announcements seem to be coming thick and fast at the moment, with both the Holiday and Hello Kitty collections on the chopping block. Here are five lipsticks I picked up from the two ranges before Christmas - the thing about ColourPop's liquid lips is that they last such a long time, it takes forever for me to get through wear testing! Not that that's a bad thing by any means; if you prefer long wear formulas I'd definitely recommend giving these a try.

Four of these are from the Holiday collection, which is packaged with matte black caps and frosted tubes, while the Hello Kitty collection features the standard glossy tube paired with bow-decorated silver caps. They have a slim angled doefoot applicator that I find easy to work with for outlining lips and distributing the product evenly.

Formula overview:
All of ColourPop's liquid lipsticks are richly pigmented and have a slightly chemical scent although it's not strong or offensive.
Three of the shades here are from the Ultra Matte range (Knotty, Perky and Wild Nothing), which dries down to a flat matte finish quickly and tends to be more hit or miss than their other formulas. When it's good, it's really bloody good and when it's bad, it's a flakey, shrivelled, drying mess. I fervently wish they'd land on something more consistent but at least at $6USD a pop they're not going to break the bank. The colours I have here are all pretty good, formula-wise; they're pigmented and don't flake, streak or cake up during application.
Surprise is an Ultra Metallic which is sheerer than the Ultra Matte formula to allow the sparkle to come through and feels a little more tacky and gritty on the lips.
Wink is from the Ultra Satin range which is definitely my favourite of ColourPop's liquid lipstick formulas, it's super pigmented and more forgiving than the Ultra Mattes yet boasts similar levels of wear.

Knotty

Knotty (discontinued) is described as a 'light warm taupe'. It's more of a peach-beige than a taupe, but okay, ColourPop. The formula isn't perfect here - you can see it's a little thicker and more prone to cracking across the center of my lips, but I still thought Knotty did well for a pale liquid matte as it is the kind of shade that is hard for any brand to nail, regardless of price point. It wore for an incredible eleven hours on me and was lightly drying. I'll admit this was a total impulse buy but I'm really glad I chucked it in my cart, it's a nude I think I'll reach for often!

Perky

Perky (discontinued) is described as a 'muted rose'. It's very similar to Cami (reviewed here) on me, a touch browner, but probably indistinguishable to non-lipstick addicts. It applied smoothly and evenly and wore for eleven hours on me, becoming lightly drying by the end.

Wild Nothing

Wild Nothing (permanent) is described as a 'dusty warm brown'. Happily, this has been added to the permanent range so you don't have to rush to grab it! Wild Nothing applies evenly and wears for eight hours without being drying.

Surprise

Surprise is described as a 'metallic finish dynamic cool-toned ruby red topped with copper and hot pink glitter'. It's incredibly similar to Let's Play Lippie Stix from the same collection (reviewed here) but the glitter is more pronounced here thanks to Surprise's sheerer formula. I needed a few layers to build up opacity and it felt tackier and chunkier with each layer, so this is definitely one I'd recommend layering over a lip pencil. The metallic finish is stunning, though whether it's worth the effort is something I'm still on the fence about! Surprise lasted five hours on me with some gathering of product along the inner portion of my lips but the sparkle stayed put and it wasn't drying.

Wink

Wink is described as a 'deep berry'. It's a richly pigmented muted berry that applies very smoothly and wears for six hours on me without drying out my lips or feathering. If you haven't tried ColourPop's Ultra Satin formula, I highly recommend grabbing Wink as a starting point before it sells out because it's just lovely!

What I liked:
  • Most shades had excellent colour payoff
  • None of them feathered or bled
  • Wear time was between six and eleven hours
  • Wink, Surprise and Wild Nothing weren't drying
What I didn't like:
  • Surprise feels gritty and tacky on the lips
  • Surprise takes several layers to build opacity
  • Knotty cracks slightly
  • Knotty and Perky were a little drying
Where to buy:
Have you tried any of these liquid lips from ColourPop?
