MAC Versicolour - Ceaseless Energy and Resilient Rouge Swatches & Review

Sick of reapplying lipstick throughout the day? Versicolour (RRP $58NZD) is a new, permanent formula from MAC marrying gloss and stain in one colour-saturated formula. They're similar to YSL's much loved Glossy Stains and the plethora of dupes that formula spawned and are definitely worth a peek for anyone who loves lasting colour without the maintenance. There are currently sixteen shades in the line up and I have two to show you today!

Versicolour Stains come in cylindrical tubes capped with MAC's usual shimmer flecked black finish. In the middle there's a clear section to show the colour and they have a long, slim doefoot applicator that tapers slightly on one side and is flat on the other. The tube is just a smidge too big to comfortably fit in standard acrylic lipstick stands.

Formula overview:
Versicolours have a sweet fruity scent with hints of vanilla. The texture is gel like and pretty easy to control with the included applicator - I was able to apply my swatches directly from the tube with no clean up or lip brushes involved. It's possible to apply these in a thin single layer for less intense colour, although you'd have to be quite careful to apply evenly. I found two coats gave me the most even colour pay off along with the intensity I wanted.

MAC call the Versicolours an 'all in one fluid formula that melts onto lips for a full-on glassy shine that lasts and lasts and lasts. Infused with emollient oils, its creamy, lightweight texture stays bright, lustrous and so comfortable without ever cracking or peeling.' You do need to be precise in your application because once applied, the Versicolours aren't coming off without a series of makeup removers (I used ZA Deep Cleansing Oil, Tosowoong Nothing Is Impossible and Clinique Clarifying Lotion in succession when I was swatching!), and time. The shine begins to fade after three to four hours, or as soon as you eat or drink, but the stain itself lasted well over eight hours on me while still being strong and even, and the remains were visible the following day. They're not drying, but they weren't comfortable the whole time either, feeling steadily more tight and clingy over the duration of wear. MAC do caution on their website that Versicolour Stains may not be suitable for those with very dry or sensitive lips.

MAC Versicolour - Ceaseless Energy Swatches & Review

Ceaseless Energy is described as a 'bright raspberry pink'. It was slightly more translucent than Resilient Rouge, giving the colour a beautiful jelly-like effect. It wore for eight hours on me and the remaining stain persisted overnight.

Resilient Rouge is a bright cherry red. This is a brilliant choice if you love a red lip but hate maintaining it! It lasted nine and half hour on me and as with Ceaseless Energy, there was still lingering stain the next day.

What I liked:
  • Buildable colour pay off; opaque in two coats
  • Formula is easy to control and apply precisely
  • Weartime comfortably reaches eight hours and lingering stain remains overnight
  • No feathering or migration
  • Non drying
What I didn't like:
  • Feels clingy and tight on the lips towards the end of wear
  • Hard to remove - I needed to use several types of makeup remover to remove it completely
