HAIR | Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener Review

Recently I've had the pleasure of trying out the rather swanky Remington Keratin & Argan Oil Nourish Straightening Irons, which are definitely a huge jump up from my old cheapie straighteners! I've been using Remington hair styling tools for years now so I was really excited to try these straighteners out.

The ceramic plates on the Keratin & Argan Oil Nourish straightener are infused with keratin and argan oil which help to maintain the health of your hair, imbue shine and combat frizz. I'm a big fan of argan oil and use it regularly, so I know it works for my hair but it should be noted that these wunderkind ingredients don't take the place of a heat protectant! Always make sure to use one to protect your hair from damage when heat styling - I love L'Oreal Supersleek Smoothing Blow-Dry Mist and Hask Express Blow Dry Hair Drying Spray.

This straightener boasts a temperature range from 190 to 230 degrees Celsius which you can adjust with plus and minus buttons located by the power button on the side of the straightener. It doesn't take long to reach your chosen temperature, either - an impressive 30 second heat up time, during which the numbers on the display will continue to flash until the ceramic plates have reached the chosen temperature. You can lock the chosen temperature in place by pressing the power switch twice - this is handy if you're prone to accidentally hitting buttons while distracted (just ask my group chat pals how many times a day I unintentionally spam them with the group emoji!). The most important feature, though, is the automatic safety shut off. Of course you should never ever leave your straightener unattended while switched on and you should unplug it after every use - BUT on the off chance you get caught out, it'll turn itself off within ten minutes or so.

Once heated up, it's really easy to use. There are small grooves on either side of the plates which help to keep your hair from getting tangled while curling your hair, the exterior is pretty cool to the touch and it's comfortable to hold. I've now been playing with this for two months and find it so much quicker to style my hair with it than with previous straighteners or curlers. My hair is on the thick side and medium length, so it would usually take me 30-45 minutes to do my whole head, but this cuts the time in half.

A couple of my friends mentioned that they struggle with straightener curls so I thought I'd share a few snaps showing how I do it!

I start off with clean, freshly brushed hair spritzed with heat protectant and some argan oil previously applied to my ends, then roughly section my hair by securing the top half in a bun. One of these days I'll buy some sectioning clips to do it properly, but for now this works just fine!

To curl my hair, I take a section of around 4 centimetres/1.5 inches between the plates, then tilt the straightener at a roughly 45 degree angle before slowly running it through my hair. The whole process takes under 10 seconds. Then I let the curl drop and move onto the next section. I usually alternate the direction I'm curling in with each section but I wanted a different effect here, so I kept the same direction.

Before long my hair's starting to look pretty crazy...

Optimal crazy hair levels achieved! After I've finished the curling, I add volume to my crown by lifting and straightening sections upwards and away from my head at a 90 degree angle, stopping about halfway down.

After the curls have had adequate time to cool and set (I usually leave them for ten minutes or so while I get on with something else, but you can blast them with the cool setting on your hair dryer to get the job done quicker), I gently brush them out with a boar bristle brush for softly defined waves. Spritz with hair spray and you're done!

Straightening my hair took even less time, and I love how sleek it looks!

And one final hairstyle for the road - soft loose beachy waves, which my friend and hairdresser Mia showed me how to do.  All you have to do is take a small section of hair and angle the straightener as if you were going to curl it, but instead of following that motion all the way down, you flip the angle back and forth as you move down the length of your hair. My old straightener simply didn't get hot enough to make it work and I'd wind up with harshly crimped sections of hair or no effect at all. Not so with the Remington Nourish straightener! I did forget heat protectant on this day so it came out a little fluffy but definitely not as much as it would have had I forgone heat protectant with my old cheapie straightener.

All in all the Remington Keratin & Argan Nourish Straightener gets a big thumbs up in my book! It retails for $149.99NZD at Farmers.

What hair styles do you like to create with a hair straightener? Have you tried this one?
