Suckered in by an irresistible sale and the get out of jail free card of an impending birthday, I treated myself to the Lime Crime M$LF Velvetines Collection last year. Being chronically averse to smoking, I loathed the packaging on sight (why they decided that would be a cool thing to glamourize, I'll never understand) but the set was reduced to something like $25 and for four full-size Velvetines in rad colours, I decided to make an exception.
Honestly, it was Low Cut that tipped me over the edge. It's one of the most perfect burnt orange shades I've ever seen and I'd buy the set again just for that shade in a heartbeat. Love or hate Lime Crime, they do a bloody good lipstick formula and these four are true to form.
Velvetines come in tubes composed of frosted glass and have metallic red caps adorned with pink roses. The doefoot applicator inside is small and well shaped to easily outline and fill in the lips.
One thing that bugs me about the Velvetines is the small amount of product you get for the price - just 2.6mls for $20USD per lipstick (although this set is currently on sale for a more reasonable $30USD and is usually around the $50 mark, superceding the total value of $80USD).
Formula Overview:
Velvetines are liquid lipsticks that dry to a flat matte finish. They have a thin, somewhat runny texture but are easy enough to control. If you're not too confident with the doefoot applicator, you may find it easier to use a lip brush (scooping product from the top of the tube or the wand) to outline your lips first and then fill them in with the applicator.
My personal favourite application method is to apply two thin coats, ensuring the first coat has dried completely before beginning the second. As with all matte lipsticks, Velvetines will highlight uneven or flaky lip texture. Hydrated and exfoliated lips are a must for them to look their best.
M$LF
M$LF is described as 'rose nude'. It's similar to Bleached, one of my other favourite neutral Velvetines, with less peach in it. M$LF applies and wears really well, applying smoothly and clocking in eight hours wear without being drying. You can't ask for much more in a great nude lippy - well, except for having it available outside of this set.
Cougar
Cougar is described as 'grey taupe'. It's not an ideal colour on me but I can't fault the formula; it's lovely and opaque and wears for six hours on me. I was a little surprised that M$LF surpassed it for wear, Cougar being a bit darker, but six hours is definitely still a respectable amount of time.
Stacy's Mom
Stacy's Mom is described as 'sugar plum mauve'. It's a medium dirty mauve, totally unique in my collection (it's not often that I get to say that!) and I LOVE IT. Isn't it awesome when a colour unexpectedly blows you away like that? Formula-wise, it felt ever so slightly more prune-lips than the others, but not horribly so. It lasted seven hours on me and wasn't drying but did stain my lips pink.
Low Cut
Low Cut is described as 'true terracotta'. I think you can see why the final shade in this quartet was the tipping point for me, it's autumn in lipstick form! The formula is impeccable, applying easily and lasting eight hours on me. Love, love, love.
- Excellent colour payoff
- Comfortable and long-wearing, lasted between six and eight hours on me
- Non-drying
- Easy to apply, doesn't clump or cake up
- Gross cigarette packet packaging - really, Lime Crime?!
