Today's MAC Monday features one of my favourite lipstick formulas from MAC; the Mattenes! This is a formula that I really wish they would make permanent instead of teasing us with every few years (they most recently appeared in MACnificent Me, 2015). These three come from the 2012 Taste Temptation collection, which was filled with rich shades of purple and had an emphasis on bold lips and smoky eyes.
Formula Overview:
The Mattene formula settles somewhere between MAC's matte and satin formulas and is generally richly pigmented with smooth application. Their slim tubes and matte rubberized packaging sets them apart from MAC's regular lipsticks. I love the look of the packaging but it is truly awful to try and keep clean - although these three are in fairly good nick, some of my other tubes haven't been so lucky! They have the usual MAC vanilla scent.

Nocturnal Instincts
Nocturnal Instincts is described as a 'mid-tone greyed lavender'. I tend to struggle with any greyed out colours but this still has enough warmth in it for me to really like it. There's very fine shimmer mixed in with the base colour but it's largely undetectable on the lips and the lip colour applies smoothly without catching on dry patches. I found Nocturnal Instincts a little sheerer than some other Mattenes which you can see more around the centre of my lips where it's not completely opaque. It wore for five and a half hours and wasn't drying.
Night Blooming
Night Blooming is described as a 'mid-tone blue pink'. It's the standout shade of the three for me, a luminous orchid pink that begs to be worn as often as possible! On me, it lasted a bit over five hours and was mostly a stain after that. Please bring this back, MAC!
Seductive Intent
Seductive Intent is described as a 'vivid purple'. Like Nocturnal Instincts, this has a small amount of shimmer mixed in and it seems to lend it that same slight sheerness. Although more purple than Night Blooming, it still feels a little too 'samey' for the one collection and I find myself wishing that they'd gone with a darker purple. Regardless of my criticism, Seductive Intent applies and wears well, lasting for five hours without being drying.
What I liked:
- Smooth application
- Wear time was between five and five and a half hours
- Night Blooming had strong colour payoff
- None of them dried out my lips or feathered
- Nocturnal Instincts and Seductive Intent were very slightly sheer
Have you ever tried MAC's Mattene lipsticks?
