MAC MONDAY | Toledo Lipsticks Swatches & Review

It may be Monday - again - but we can soften the blow with a look back at the lipsticks from 2015's MAC Toledo collection. I've reviewed a few pieces from this collection over the years - Oxblood Lipglass and Sin Lipstick at the time of their release, and Ripe Peach Blush Ombre for a previous MAC Monday post. It's a fun one to revisit but the lipsticks, unsurprisingly, are my favourite part!

I really enjoy the attention to detail many of MAC's limited edition packaging collections possess. In the Toledo collection, the graphic patterns often present in Toledo designs make an appearance inside the boxes, while the lipstick tubes feature a stylized face with rosebud red lips. The tubes are rubberized, which was a misstep, I feel, especially after having had these in my collection a few years and watching them get steadily dirtier. It's not as though they've been left rolling around the bottom of my handbag, either - they're in my lipstick drawer most of the time, but even so, the packaging has picked up numerous miscellaneous stains and it's impossible to clean. Super annoying.

Formula Overview:
This is a collection for matte lipstick fans. All six shades are in MAC's Matte finish, which is richly pigmented with a velvet-smooth texture. I don't typically find this formula drying although I know some people do, and I tend to get very good wear times out of it, too.

Oxblood

Oxblood is described as a 'light peachy nude' and has a Matte finish. I remember this being a near instant sell-out when this collection released and I ended up buying a little over retail because I have collection completion issues and an unbridled lust for peachy nudes. Sorry, not sorry. Kinda Sexy from the permanent range and fellow limited edition release Enchanted One come close to Oxblood, but both lack the hint of pink that makes Oxblood so appealing to me. It lasts five hours on me and isn't drying.

Barbecue is described as a 'vivid orange-red'. Although MAC churn out great orange-reds like nobody's business, Barbecue was slightly sheerer than the swatch belies and left me feeling slightly underwhelmed. It's still a perfectly nice lipstick, lasting seven hours on me without drying out my lips. But with better performing shades like So Chaud in the permanent range, I wouldn't fret about tracking Barbecue down.

Tenor Voice is described as a 'true classic red'. It is indeed a classic red, the kind of strawberry-bright hue that makes my heart happy. It lasted eight hours on me without feathering or being drying.

Victoriana is described as a 'mid-tone pink red'. The pinkness is really only visible when shown alongside Tenor Voice in the arm swatch further up, I think. It doesn't pull as pinky-red as a shade like Love Goddess does. All of that is not to say that I don't love it, because I really do. The formula is consistent with MAC's better mattes and Victoriana lasts seven and a half hours on me without feathering or drying out my lips. Love.

MAC Opera Lipstick Swatches & Review

Opera is described as 'dark red' and has a Matte finish. Okay, I might be red-lipstick obsessed but even I can admit that Tenor Voice, Victoriana and Opera are hairs apart. Opera isn't so much a dark red as 'a smidgen darker than its predecessors'. I don't regret having this in my collection at all, because I'm sick that way, but MAC and the Toledos probably could have culled it down to one bright red. HOWEVER - Opera is undeniably beautiful, and like its sister reds, applied and wore superbly. It lasted nine hours on me, wasn't drying and didn't feather or migrate.

MAC Opera Lipstick Swatches & Review

What I liked:
  • All but Barbecue were richly pigmented
  • Long wearing - wore between five and nine hours
  • Non-drying
  • Didn't feather or migrate
What I didn't like:
  • Barbecue was a little sheerer than the others, despite all being the Matte formula
