Woohoo! I just got back off the Notoriously Morbid Vanishing Cabinet waitlist and I figure, what better way to celebrate than with some old Vanishing Cabinet reviews? Longtime readers will know that I always struggle with cool toned colours and March 2016's VC well and truly stumped me for over a year as three of the four eyeshadows within are cool toned. I don't love all the looks I came up with using these colours but I'm glad I gave them a go.
About the subscription:
The Vanishing Cabinet is a monthly subscription service from US based indie brand Notoriously Morbid. The amount of products included seems to vary, but there's typically three to four products in each and occasionally six in special VCs. It's $13.25USD within the US and $20USD for international (including shipping), so a very reasonable monthly treat! All swatches are applied to bare skin (on the left) and over Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy (on the right) using a patting motion and photographed under daylight bulbs.
March 2016's theme was the film Donnie Darko. I confess I've only seen it once and my memory of it is pretty hazy so I won't postulate too much on the shade names and meanings!
Philosophy of Time Travel
Philosophy of Time Travel is a dusty purple with pink, blue and silver sparkles. A sparklebomb that definitely benefitted from an adhesive base.
I've used heaps of Notoriously Morbid shades for this look - Mistress of the Dark on the centre of the lid, Nearly Headless Nick on the inner third, Philosophy of Time Travel on the outer third and lower lashline, Head Key on the inner corner and He's Going Through Changes on the crease. Not my best effort, but live and learn! The lashes are Ardell Demi Wispies.
Frank
Frank is a cool medium grey with strong purple sheen and sparkles. It looks best applied over a sticky base, as you can see from the swatches, but holds its own without one, which is how I've shown it on my lower lashline in the below makeup look.
Here, I've used Bram on the inner half of the lid, Degrees of Death and Virtue on the outer half of the lid, Frank on the lower lashline, Bunnies Frighten Me on the inner corner, Doll's Eye on the crease, He's Going Through Changes for the transition and It's the White Hats on the browbone. The lashes are these Ebay faux mink lashes in style 3.
Wake Up
Wake Up is a medium dusty purple loaded with gold to green shimmer and finer purple sparkles. Oh, how I wish I suited cool tones so that I could pull this off! It's gorgeous, alas, just not on me.
Cellar Door
Cellar Door is a ruddy brown with what looks like subtle crimson sheen to me and larger golden sparkles. Predictable as I am, it's my favourite from this set, and I was pleased with how well it applied without a base on the lower lashline in the look below - from the arm swatch, it looked like it might have needed one to shine.
Here I've used The Block Ness Monster over sticky base on the inner half of the lid and alone on the inner corner, Cellar Door on the outer half of the lid and lower lashline, Live to Serve on the crease and It's the White Hats on the browbone. The faux mink lashes are from Ebay in the style A19.
The final product in this VC is a solid perfume called Mad World. It's described as having a "coffee, candied berries, raspberries, and lilacs" fragrance, the bitter coffee note coming through most strongly to me. It's not really my thing, but that's okay. It's the luck of the draw with subscription services, really!
March 20116 was mostly misses for me, just based on personal taste but the formulas and creative interpretation of the theme were excellent, as always. What do you think of the products included?
