MAC Monday | Cult of Cherry - Kirsch Mattene Swatches & Review

Cult of Cherry is one of those hallowed collections I've lusted after from afar for many years. MAC have done quite a few red themed collections, but I think this was one of the earliest, launching in July 2008 (and quickly followed by Red, She Said for the holiday season that year). It also marked the second outing of the Mattenes, which had first debuted in their eponymous collection in 2007.

I'd love to get my hands on the three other Mattenes that featured in this collection (Rapturous, Chock-Ful and Bing) but for now I'll settle for Kirsch, which was a lucky find on MUABS. The Mattene formula settles somewhere between MAC's matte and satin formulas and is generally richly pigmented with smooth application. Their slim tubes and matte rubberized packaging sets them apart from MAC's regular lipsticks. I love the look of the packaging but it is truly awful to try and keep clean. They have the usual MAC vanilla scent.

Kirsch is described as a 'blackened cranberry'. It has subtle red sparkles which aren't really noticeable on the lips but can be seen peeking through in the arm swatches and the close up of the lipstick bullet. It has mostly even colour pay off but there's a slipperiness to this particular shade that makes it a little difficult to even out completely - definitely one that needs a coordinating lip liner to suit my tastes better. It lasts for just over five hours on me and is slightly drying but despite its flaws, I'm really happy to have a small piece from this collection and love the colour. What do you think of Kirsch?

What I liked:
  • Mostly opaque colour pay off
  • Wears for five hours
  • No feathering or bleeding
What I didn't like:
  • Can be hard to completely even out the colour
  • Minimally drying
  • Hard to keep packaging clean
