Wowza, these beauties have been lingering in my drafts folder for an embarrassing length of time. I have a love/hate relationship with Lime Crime - love the products, hate the drama, but then again, that seems to sum up my feelings for Kat Von D and Jeffree Star these days as well. Lately I feel like the drama is sucking all the fun out of products I genuinely like which drives me further in my infatuation with hand formulated indies. I do really like these two shades of Velvetines though, and picked up a bunch more in their recent sale so keep an eye out for those.
Velvetines come boxed with labels that match the lipstick colour inside. The tubes are composed of frosted glass and metallic red caps adorned with pink roses. The doefoot applicator inside is small and well shaped to easily outline and fill in the lips.
One thing that bugs me about the Velvetines is the small amount of product you get for the price - just 2.6mls for $20USD. For this reason, I almost exclusively stick to shopping Lime Crime's sales, which fortunately happen quite often.

Formula Overview:
Velvetines are liquid lipsticks that dry to a flat matte finish. They have a thin, somewhat runny texture but are easy enough to control. If you're not too confident with the doefoot applicator, you may find it easier to use a lip brush (scooping product from the top of the tube or the wand) to outline your lips first and then fill them in with the applicator.
My personal favourite application method is to apply two thin coats, ensuring the first coat has dried completely before beginning the second. As with all matte lipsticks, Velvetines will highlight uneven or flaky lip texture. Hydrated and exfoliated lips are a must for them to look their best.
Bleached is described as a 'peachy nude'. It's mostly opaque with some faint streaking that isn't visible from a normal viewing distance and it applies smoothly without clumping. It's my favourite nude option from the limited selection of LC nudes I possess as I find the peachiness super flattering. Bleached lasted for seven hours on me with some wear to the centre of my lips. I didn't find it drying during that time.
Faded
Faded is described as a 'light mauve'. It's a medium mauve on me, drying darker and pinker than it appears in the tube. It looks very different to the pictures on the website although I'm still happy with the colour; I think it's quite unique and really like it. I found Faded very easy to work with and wonderfully pigmented, with a seven hour wear time. It wasn't drying.
- Good colour payoff
- Comfortable and long-wearing, lasted seven hours on me
- Non-drying
- Easy to apply, doesn't clump or cake up
- Bleached had some faint streaking
Have you tried either of these colours?
