LA Girl, always a brand on top of creating affordable alternatives to popular lippy formulas, released their liquid matte lipsticks a year or so ago to much excitement in the beauty community. There are 16 on-trend shades in the range, covering everything from the quintessential nudes to classic reds and vampy purples with plenty in between. I picked up a bunch of them in an array of colours a while back, so let's take a look!
The Matte Pigment Glosses apply like lip gloss, with a smooth and not overly runny consistency. Most shades apply evenly, but pigments that are typically problematic, such as those with a white base, neon pigment or the ever finicky purple, cause the usual issues with streaking or cakiness.
I didn't find the formula drying, but it can feel heavier on the lips than some liquid mattes and thus more noticeable and potentially uncomfortable during wear. If you prefer a lighter formula, these are probably not for you.

Fleur
Fleur is a light terracotta shade with great colour pay off. This is my favourite of the ones I chose, the formula gave me no trouble and the shade is unique in my slew of nude & neutral lipsticks. It lasted for five hours on me.
Playful
Playful is a neon pink with yellow leanings (LA Girl's promo swatch depicts it as a medium plummy-pink, which is pretty confusing and as you can see, wildly off base). It was streaky and difficult to even out, making the final application somewhat cakey. It lasted five hours on me and wasn't drying.
Obsess
Obsess is a warm strawberry red. It applied really nicely and wore for seven hours without being drying.
Frisky
Frisky is a medium-dark blue based red. It applied evenly with excellent colour pay off and wore for seven hours.
Black Currant
Black Currant is a dark, warm purple. It was incredibly streaky and stained pink strongly almost immediately, causing the pink to show through the streaks and surrounding lip line, further emphasizing the uneven finish. It lasted seven hours on me and wasn't drying.
What I liked:
- Most shades had good colour pay off
- Wear time was between five and seven hours
- Non drying
- Black Currant is very streaky and the strong staining emphasises this
- Playful is streaky and somewhat cakey
