I love a foundation that offers great coverage, but it can be a double edged sword at times, with higher coverage often sacrificing luminosity in favour of a matte, flat finish. And sometimes that's what we want and what suits our skin best, but other times matte can be unforgiving and even ageing, particularly if you struggle with dry skin. That's why I prefer the new generation of skincare-infused foundations, which marry skincare benefits with great coverage and a natural finish. Bobbi Brown's Skin Nourishing Glow Foundation is the latest of these that I have tried and I've quickly become a fan!
Packaged in glossy black with an airless pump to keep your foundation fresh and emblazoned with a gold Bobbi Brown crest, Skin Nourishing Glow certainly looks the part to match its luxe price tag (RRP $110NZD). It dispenses just the right amount of foundation (don't you hate the pumps that give you a huge dollop that you'll never use in one go?) and contains 30ml of product.
If you click to enlarge the swatch image, you'll see the secret to the luminous finish Skin Nourishing Glow offers: there's very fine, sparse sparkle in the formula. I don't think I've seen this in another foundation before, but if you're reeling back in horror at the prospect of a Twilight-vampire effect, stop panicking - it's very subtle in person. If I lean close to a mirror and really study my skin, I can see the sparkle and it may be more visible in strong sunlight, but in most situations it's not going to be an issue unless you really, really abhor shimmer beyond all reason.
This is a very hydrating formula, with Bobbi Brown promising long-term hydration even after you've removed your makeup. I don't wear foundation daily, so I've not worn back to back for a long enough testing period to comment on long-term effects but I do feel that my skin is more hydrated during and immediately after wear.
Before & after Bobbi Brown Skin Nourishing Glow foundation - no concealer or editing
With the rest of my makeup, including concealer
The shade I have, Porcelain, is the lightest of the nine available shades and a pretty good match for me. Perhaps a hair too warm if I'm nitpicking, but once the rest of my makeup is on it's not something that I notice at all. The coverage is even and covers redness well but doesn't look cakey or thick.
Skin Nourishing Glow wears like a dream. My skin type is combination-oily and I sometimes have issues with certain foundations breaking down on my nose and chin during the day, but although Skin Nourishing Glow is designed for dry to normal skin, it performed perfectly for me. There was no breakdown, no oiliness coming through, just a gradual, even fade over the course of the day. I did notice that it was quite prone to transferring if my face came into contact with something, such as the display screen on my camera or my phone screen, although it didn't affect how the foundation looked on me - you're not going to accidentally wipe your face and lose all coverage.
All in all, I'm really enjoying this foundation and would definitely consider repurchasing when I run out. If you're interested in trying it too, I recommend getting matched and requesting a sample to trial at your nearest Bobbi Brown counter. The staff I've encountered at the stores in the Wellington region have always been wonderful and happy to accommodate - they know you don't want to plonk down a serious amount of money on a foundation without knowing it's right for you!
What I liked:
- Great coverage
- Doesn't look cakey or thick, blends nicely into skin
- Wears really well and fades evenly
- Hydrates skin, and the feeling lasts after makeup has been removed
What I didn't like:
- Subtle shimmer (more of a 'meh' for me than a dislike, in all honesty)
