I'm slowly working my way through Maybelline's onslaught of new releases for 2016 and let me tell you, the Color Blurs might just be my favourite of the lot. They're velvety smooth, highly pigmented matte lip pencils with a built in smudger to take them from intense colour to a trendy ombre effect in a flash. Best of all, they have a pretty wallet friendly RRP of $16.99 here in New Zealand. I have four of the five shades available to show you today, the missing shade is Partner in Crimson which I am definitely going to be checking out soon based on the performance of these.
The packaging for each Color Blur is matched to the lipstick colour which is both convenient and eye catching. They twist up from the end cap, which for some reason, my brain finds impossible to comprehend - I keep finding myself trying to twist it up at the lid join. The included elastomer smudger is firm enough to manipulate the colour into a gradient - a patting method worked best for me - but has enough squish that it doesn't tug or drag at the lips. It also pops off for easy cleaning.
Instructions to create a gradient look are included on the lid, which is a helpful touch.
The Color Blurs pack a pigmented punch! All four of the shades I received have wonderful colour pay off and lasted around five hours. They're lightweight, and have the slight slipperiness of silica to help them glide onto the lips, yet they stay in place beautifully, no feathering or migration in sight. As you'd expect with a matte formula, they can emphasise flakes and dry patches, but not overly so, and they can be clingy, but I didn't experience any drying.
Swatch notes:
All swatches are on bare skin/lips and are photographed under daylight bulbs. I've shown each shade applied in a gradient style and completely opaque, so you can get a good feel for how they perform with each application method.

I Like To Mauve It
I Like To Mauve It is a soft mauve tinted nude shade. This is a lovely option if you find brown based neutrals unflattering. It lasted five hours on me and was noticeably clingy.
Pink Insanity
Pink Insanity is one of the best drugstore neon pink lipsticks I've ever come across. It's intensely bright, applies beautifully and lasts for five hours.
Orange Ya Glad
Orange Ya Glad is possibly my favourite from the bunch, a stunning vermilion orange absolutely saturated with pigment. It lasts for five hours on me and is somewhat clingy.
Plum, Please
Plum, Please is a rich darkened plum. I do love a good vampy, so I was really excited to play with this! It looks a little vampiric as a gradient on me, but perhaps that's your jam. Like the other shades, it lasted five hours on me.
What I liked:
- Great colour pay off
- Smooth application, no pulling or tugging
- Easy to create a gradient effect with the elastomer smudger
- Consistently wore for five hours
What I didn't like:
- Can feel clingy on the lips
